Does Mushroom Coffee Work? What Our Customers Say

If you feel flustered every now and then, that’s pretty normal. Most of us are just trying to make it through the day without snapping at our inbox or forgetting why we walked into a room. However, many people swear by mushroom coffee and its benefits for brain fog and stress.
But… does it actually work, or is it just another wellness trend in a fancy mug? Today, we're cracking open the science behind the shrooms and breaking down what’s actually in your mushroom coffee.
What Is Mushroom Coffee?
Mushroom coffee isn’t just regular coffee with a side of shiitake. It’s a blend of real coffee (at least in our case — we can’t speak for other brands) and powdered extracts from functional mushrooms like lion’s mane, chaga, reishi, and cordyceps.
These aren’t your pizza-topping mushrooms. Instead, they’re adaptogenic fungi that have been used in traditional Chinese medicine and modern wellness circles for everything from brain health to immune support.
The idea is to get all the benefits of coffee (like that jolt of Monday-morning energy) without the post-caffeine crash or jitter-fueled spiral. Most mushroom coffee brands also toss in bonus ingredients to level up your cup even more.
What’s in Mushroom Coffee?
Every brand of mushroom coffee has its own unique brew. Some feature reishi and turkey tail, while others add ingredients like astragalus or ashwagandha. With so many brands out there, it’s hard to provide a definitive list of everything that could be in your cup. So instead, we’ll just break down the ingredients we chose to include in our Mushroom Coffee+.
Functional Mushrooms
Let’s start with the main ingredients in our coffee: lion’s mane and chaga. Lion’s mane is a shaggy-looking mushroom that’s been shown in some studies to support the body’s production of nerve growth factor (NGF), which may support memory, focus, and brain cell regeneration.
Then there’s chaga, a dark, earthy mushroom loaded with antioxidants. It’s been used traditionally to soothe systemic irritation and oxidative stress.
L-Theanine
L-theanine is a naturally occurring amino acid found in green tea, and it’s best known for promoting calm, focused alertness. When paired with caffeine (like in our mushroom coffee), L-theanine helps smooth out the negative side effects like jitters and heart palpitations.
Research shows that L-theanine may support alpha brain wave activity, which is associated with relaxed concentration. Plus, it does all of this without making you sleepy. It’s a win-win!
Coffee Extract
Unlike other brands, our mushroom coffee still contains real coffee, just in a more mindful, mellow form. Our coffee is made with a low-acid coffee extract to help prevent the harsh effects on your gut and nervous system.
Don’t worry, though — this extract still delivers 45 mg of caffeine per serving, which is significantly less than a traditional cup of coffee (which averages 95 to 120 mg). That means more energy with fewer jitters. Plus, coffee is also rich in polyphenols, which may support antioxidant activity and even gut health.
Collagen
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. It’s an important part of skin elasticity, joint health, and even gut lining support.
In our mushroom coffee, we use four grams of hydrolyzed collagen peptides per serving, which dissolve more quickly and are easier for your body to use. Sourced from 100% bovine, this protein adds a subtle creaminess and helps keep you fuller for longer.
What Does the Science Say?
These benefits are all well and good, but what does the science say? Here’s the tea (erm, we mean coffee):
- Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus): Small studies suggest lion’s mane may minimize feelings of anxiety and depression. Other studies also show lion’s mane’s potential in supporting gut microbiota balance.
- Chaga (Inonotus obliquus): Rich in beta-glucans and polyphenols, chaga has been shown in vitro to support the body’s production of immune cells and reduce oxidative stress. Chaga’s high antioxidant levels may also protect the gut lining and support liver function.
- L-Theanine: One study found that 200 mg of L-theanine supported sleep quality and reduced feelings of stress in healthy adults. Combined with caffeine, L-theanine can also support attention-switching accuracy and ease mental fatigue, per multiple placebo-controlled studies.
- Coffee Extract: Moderate coffee intake is associated with a lower risk of depressive feelings and cognitive decline, per one study. Coffee extract can also support good gut bacteria growth and even support digestion.
- Collagen Peptides: One review suggested collagen peptides were linked to healthy skin elasticity and hydration after consistent use. Additionally, glycine (a key amino acid in collagen) has been linked to good sleep quality and thermoregulation, especially when taken at night.

Across dozens of reviews, customers rave about increased mental clarity, lower feelings of anxiety, and a calmer, more focused energy without the dreaded afternoon crash. Many also note better digestion and fewer jitters than with traditional coffee.
Don’t take our word for it, though. Here are some reviews from real customers:
- “I work 12-13 hours night shift. This cofee [sic] really made a huge difference. I am more energized (not hyperactive) and more focused. No crash. No jitters. Just enough energy to keep me going. Puts me in a good mood too. The flavor is good especially adding my favorite sugar free creamer. I just wish they come in bigger bags” - Stephanie B.
- “This little scoop of powder has changed my mornings completely!! I add it to my morning cup of coffee and it gives me the most amazing, pure energy with no crash afterwards! I work as an elementary teacher and Daily Dose is now a staple in my life! I also LOVE the little bonus gifts that are sent along with the monthly supply.” - Kristi H.
- “I could not be happier with EveryDay Dose. I tried it initially for the energy/mental clarity, but boy oh boy. Gut Health, digestion, clarity of though [sic] and MY HAIR. I have photos of the mostly bald spot that USED TO BE on the top of my head. Whether it is the mushrooms, collagen or a combination of those and other things, I do not know. What I DO KNOW? My bald spot is MIA and my hair is nearing its original springiness, thickness and vitality.” - Terri J.
- “Thought it would taste like dirt, but actually is magical! Delicious and so good with different creamers, milks, anything! Iced to hot, regular to bold, haven't had a bad cup yet! Clean energy, better gut health, and improved skin. Will never go back to regular coffee!” - Bradley H.
