YOUR BODY'S GLUE
COLLAGEN PROTEIN
From the Greek for “glue” — Collagen makes up your connective tissue, skin, hair, nails, and joints, while also promoting gut health and overall physical wellbeing. Unfortunately, collagen production declines with age, which is one of the main reasons we suffer from joint problems, thinning hair, and dulled skin later in life. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, people drank a form of collagen gelatin made from donkey hide to promote youth and longevity. Due to its fragile nature, scientists struggled for decades to extract a bioavailable form of collagen until the late 1980s. Since then, collagen has become popular as a dietary supplement and cosmetic treatment.

Collagen Protein
The Science
Collagen is a fibrous protein composed of amino acids – mainly glycine, proline, glutamine, and hydroxyproline. It is the primary component of the outer layer of skin (dermis) and provides structural support to maintain the skin’s moisture, elasticity, and texture. Your body breaks the collagen into amino acids to build new proteins, such as Keratin which make up our hair.
These amino acids also rebuild and strengthen the lining of the digestive tract and seal the little holes created by diet, antibiotics, and stress. This protects you from unwanted food particles, toxins, and pathogens entering your bloodstream. When gut impermeability is restored, only the desired nutrients are able to pass through, lowering inflammation and allowing your immune system to rest.
Collagen is a key component of cartilage, the connective tissue that cushions our joints and prevents bones from rubbing against each other. It also helps maintain the integrity of ligaments and tendons, which connect bones and muscles, respectively. Adequate collagen levels are essential for joint flexibility, mobility, and overall joint health. As collagen production decreases with age, joints may become more prone to wear and tear, leading to conditions like osteoarthritis.
